
He has received various awards and distinctions, such as the Equerre d’Argent in 1987 for the Institut du Monde Arabe, again in 1993 for the Lyon Opera, Commandeur dans l’ordre des arts et des lettres, Golden Lion at the 2000 Venice Biennale, Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2001, Borromini Award for the Lucerne Centre de Culture et de Congrès in 2001, Praemium Imperiale in 2001, Wolf Prize in 2005, Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize in Architecture and the International Highrise Award for the Torre Agbar in 2006.
His most important designs include the Institut du Monde Arabe, the Lyon Opera, the Tour Congress Centre, the Fondation Cartier, the Galeries Lafayette in Berlin, Lucerne’s Centre de Culture et de Congrès, The Hotel in Lucerne, the Andel building in Prague, the Cité Judiciaire in Nantes, the renovation of a gasometer into residences in Vienna, the Dentsu tower in Tokyo, the Technology Centre in Wismar, the Musée Gallo Romain (Vesunna) in Perigueux, the Agbar tower in Barcelona, the extension of the Reina Sofia museum in Madrid, the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris and the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis.
His chief projects currently proposed or under construction are: the City Metropolitana project in Barcelona, the headquarters of the Richemont company in Geneva, the Copenhagen concert hall, a library in Cyprus, the Centre de la Mer and aquatic complex in Le Havre, Montpellier’s town hall, an office building in London, two residential buildings in New York, a tower in Vienna containing shops, offices and a hotel, the Archipel theatre in Perpignan, residential buildings in Ibiza, a hotel in Barcelona and an office tower in Marseille.
