The Philharmonie de Paris, an association supported by the French State and the City of Paris, is undertaking the construction of a complex for the performance of music centred on a major concert auditorium with a capacity of some 2,400 seats in the Parc de la Villette, in the north-east district of Paris.
Devoted primarily to staging concert performances by large symphony orchestras, the Philharmonie de Paris will also be capable of presenting other forms of amplified music such as jazz and world music.
Located in the rapidly changing north-east district of the French capital, in a park dedicated largely to cultural activities, the complex, a landmark clearly visible from the city limit, will be enhanced by innovative architecture. The acoustics in the auditorium will meet the most exacting international standards. In a departure from proscenium-based designs it will allow the public to envelope the stage area, reinforcing the sense of intimacy shared by the musicians and their audience.
A home for orchestras, the Philharmonie de Paris will be able to accommodate several permanent or temporary resident formations, and will support an ambitious educational and cultural project. The total working area of the complex will be around 20,000 m2. It will include, in addition to the main auditorium, lobbies and rehearsal areas, administrative premises for several orchestras, an educational wing, exhibition areas, a restaurant, and the infrastructures required for logistics, technical equipment and a car park.
The exemplary environmentally sensitive construction will comply fully with a recognised environmental endorsement process.
Delivery is scheduled for 2012.
